India saw more than 5,000 child adoptions last year, highest in a decade

India saw a record 5,022 children adopted between April 2025 and March 2026. Domestic adoptions accounted for 4,603 children, while inter-country adoptions numbered 419. Special needs children adoption increased by twenty-five percent, reaching 392 last year. Adoptions of girls also rose by eight percent, continuing past trends. Relative and step-parent adoptions saw a significant fifty percent increase.
